What Is Stretch Film Thickness?

What Is Stretch Film Thickness?

Stretch film thickness is typically measured in microns (µm)  In Malaysia and most parts of the world, microns are commonly used:

  • 1 micron = 1 millionth of a meter (0.001 mm)
  • Typical stretch film thickness ranges from about 12 microns (thin) up to 35 microns (thick).

Why Does Thickness Matter?

Thickness determines how resistant the stretch film is to punctures, tears, and stretching. Here’s how it influences packaging performance:

  • Thicker Film = Greater Strength and Durability
Thicker films have more material, so they provide better protection for heavy, sharp, or bulky items that might puncture or tear thinner films.
  • Thinner Film = More Flexibility and Cost Efficiency
Thinner films are lighter and less expensive, ideal for wrapping lighter or less fragile products where maximum protection is not necessary.

Typical Thickness Grades and Their Uses

Thickness (Microns) Approximate Use Case Benefits Considerations
12 – 15 microns Light loads like small boxes, lightweight goods Affordable, easy to stretch and handle Lower puncture resistance
17 – 20 microns Medium loads, moderately heavy items Good balance of strength and cost Suitable for most general uses
22 – 30 microns Heavy or sharp-edged items, pallets, industrial loads Excellent puncture and tear resistance Slightly higher cost and weight
Above 30 microns Very heavy or extreme protection needed Maximum durability and load stability Heaviest and most costly option

Sumopack’s Recommendation

For most Malaysian e-commerce sellers and manufacturers:

  • Start with a 23-micron thickness stretch film for a good balance of protection and cost-efficiency. Check the price HERE
  • If you’re packing very lightweight or delicate items, a 12-15 micron film might suffice, but handle with care. Nano 12micron Price
