Stretch film is a highly elastic plastic film designed to stretch around a load and cling to itself. It does not need heat. A worker can apply it by hand, or a warehouse can use a stretch wrapping machine for higher-volume pallet loads. As the film stretches, it creates holding force that keeps cartons, products, and palletized goods together.

Shrink wrap is a plastic film that contracts when heat is applied. The product is wrapped or bagged first, then passed through a heat tunnel or heated with a heat gun. As the film shrinks, it forms a close, fitted layer around the item or bundle.

That difference determines the job each material does best. Stretch film is mainly for load containment and transport stability. Shrink wrap is mainly for product presentation, tamper evidence, dust protection, and bundling finished goods for sale.

When Stretch Film Is the Better Choice

Stretch film is the working material for palletized shipments. If cartons need to move from your warehouse to a retailer, fulfillment center, customer site, or delivery vehicle, stretch film is normally the practical choice. It holds the load to the pallet, helps reduce carton movement, and provides a layer of protection from dust and light moisture during handling.

It is also efficient because it does not require a heat source, dedicated tunnel, or cooling time. A hand roll and dispenser can support low to medium packing volume. When Shrink Wrap Is the Better Choice

The fitted appearance is the main advantage. Unlike stretch film, shrink wrap does not leave loose layers or visible overlap around the product when applied correctly. This makes it useful when customers will see the packaging on a shelf, in a store display, or when opening a delivered order.

For example, a seller offering a two-pack of bottled products may use shrink wrap to keep the pair together. A manufacturer may use it around a printed carton to protect the surface during storage and distribution. A retailer may use it to combine seasonal gift items into one saleable set.

Shrink wrap can also discourage casual opening. It is not a high-security seal, but a torn or removed film layer gives a visible sign that the pack has been opened. That is useful for many consumer products where presentation and basic tamper evidence matter.

What Shrink Wrap Requires

Shrink wrapping needs more than film. You need a suitable heat source, safe operating space, and a process that protects both staff and products. Small operations may use a heat gun and sealing tool. A common warehouse setup uses both. Stretch film secures the outer pallet for transport. Shrink wrap protects or bundles the individual retail units inside the cartons. Each material handles a different layer of the packing operation.

Do not rely on either wrap to fix a poorly built pallet. Cartons should be stacked squarely, heavy goods should stay low, and the pallet should be in sound condition.
